What to Expect

Rockcliffe Park is the wealthiest neighbourhood in Ottawa. It is commonly referred to by its residents as “The Village”, as it was once a separate village and not under the jurisdiction of Ottawa’s municipal government. The area was formerly owned by Thomas McKay, the stonemason of the Rideau Canal and the builder of Rideau Hall. Rockcliffe Park is one of Canada’s first recreation parks and was officially opened in 1800. The Village offers a breathtaking glimpse into the past as there are many historical buildings throughout the area. A considerable amount of Rockcliffe Park is still wooded and houses are on wide lots, fairly far apart from each other. Roughly 100 properties are homes to Ambassadors, High Commissioners, as well as other foreign government representatives. Rockcliffe Park could be considered the perfect place to raise children, it has a substantial park system, incredible schools, low-traffic volume, and a public library whose main focus is the education of children.

Demographics

Residents are very wealthy, middle aged families and older couples. They are culturally diverse and consist of university graduates who work white collar jobs. The area offers residents access to stunning scenery throughout the park itself, McKay lake, Sand Pits Lake, and the Rockeries. The area has outstanding schooling options for children in the Village, there are two private schools and a public school.

Lifestyle

Residents of Rockcliffe Park are made up of people who have developed healthy and generally active lifestyles. They have access to two Tennis Clubs, numerous tennis courts, a yacht club, and there are sailing and rowing organizations located on the Ottawa River. There are numerous pathways and trails for residents to go cycling, walking or jogging, or they can even go for a quick swim in the stunning pond. An updated calendar of exercise activities for both children and adults is available at the local community center. Residents have easy access to the Rideau Canal which offers family activities such as skating in the winter and watercraft of all sorts in summer months. While there aren’t any commercial establishments within the limits of Rockcliffe Park, residents aren’t a far drive from the Byward Market where nearly all amenities can be accessed.

The greenspace known as Rockcliffe Park enables visitors to enjoy the parks, wooded areas, and lookouts that are available to the public. The area also includes public restrooms and a gazebo that are maintained by the NCC (National Capital Commission). The Village hosts numerous events and fund raising activities throughout the schools and community center. There are tons of family friendly activities nearby, such as skiing at Camp Fortune which is just a short drive away. The Rockcliffe Park branch of the Ottawa Library was fortunate to have an art book collection and science book collection donated to their location. For those who love the outdoors, there will always be something to do in Rockcliffe Park.
